Oya is a goddess associated with lightning, winds, storms, death, and reincarnation. She is often prayed to for protection, strength, improved self-confidence and self-esteem, and the development of psychic abilities.

Her feast day is celebrated on February 2nd, and she is associated with Fridays and the number nine. Sacred places associated with Oya include the wind, cemetery gates, and marketplaces. Brown or burgundy are her typical colors, and combinations of nine colors (except black) are also used. Oya is often depicted with tools such as a machete, scythe, or horsetail fly-whisk.

Oya is known for her fierce and temperamental nature, and is considered a protective deity. In some syncretized religions, she is associated with the Catholic figure of the Virgen de la Candelaria or Saint Theresa.
